J. Barry Mitchell retired as president of ComEd in June of 2009. In this capacity, he was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company, which delivers electric services to approximately 3.7 million customers throughout Northern Illinois. ComEd has 5,600 employees and revenues of approximately $5.8 billion.

Mitchell joined PECO Energy Company of Philadelphia as an analyst in its finance department and progressed through various positions in finance and corporate planning, being named vice president and treasurer in December 1994. In October 2000, Exelon Corporation was created as a result of the merger between PECO Energy Corporation and Unicom Corporation, and Mitchell was named vice president and treasurer of the newly formed firm. In April 2002, he was named senior vice president and treasurer; in September 2003, he was also named business unit chief financial officer; and in March 2005, he was named chief financial officer. He was appointed president of ComEd in November 2005. Shortly after his retirement from ComEd/Exelon, Mitchell served as acting CEO of Energy Insurance Mutual from August 2009 through January 2010.

Mitchell serves on the board of Energy Insurance Mutual. He serves as a member of the executive committee of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (Illinois Chapter) and as a board member of the Merit School of Music.

Barry graduated from Lehigh University in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in business administration and MBA in finance in 1971. He is also a 1987 graduate of the Executive Development Program at the Darden School of the University of Virginia. He and his wife, Beth, have three sons.
