ex·tern·ship

A training program that is part of the course of study required by an educational institution and is taken in private business.

The externship component of the M.Eng. in structural engineering program offers students a glimpse of their professional possibilities after graduation. This real-world, real-work opportunity allows them to experience structural engineering in a way that both reinforces their education and informs their career goals.

Externships take place in August and January, during breaks between semesters. Students spend one week working at a sponsor’s firm, which tailors the student’s agenda around the activities of its business. Typical externship activities include:

  • Shadowing engineers
  • Performing calculations
  • Reviewing drawings
  • Visiting job sites
  • Investigating structural problems
  • Experiencing the company culture

While the primary purpose of the program is to enrich the students’ knowledge of the industry, these externships benefit our sponsors and future graduates alike. The “on the job” visit allows sponsoring firms to showcase their company to prospective applicants from Lehigh, while students get to network with professional engineers in their work environment.
