What is Polymer Science and Engineering

What is Polymer Science and Engineering?

Polymer science and engineering (PSE) is an interdisciplinary field that integrates principles from engineering, chemistry, and physics to study polymers.

The unique molecular structure of polymers gives them remarkable versatility, enabling them to be easily processed and shaped into complex forms. Their distinctive chemistry also allows for tunable functionality and properties, whether mechanical, chemical, optical, electronic, or otherwise. As a result, polymers are used in a vast array of products and are produced in large quantities, making them essential to our everyday lives. For this reason, the PSE field is leading efforts to make plastics more sustainable by tackling challenges related to plastic waste accumulation, identifying renewable material sources, and reducing environmental impacts across all stages of the material life cycle.

OUR MISSION

The Online Graduate Program in Polymer Science and Engineering provides a relevant and in-depth education in polymers, emphasizing theoretical foundations and practical applications while committing to academic rigor and excellence. Our goal is to prepare and equip the students with knowledge and skills to address challenges and become leaders in the dynamic polymer science field.

OUR HISTORY

Established in 1975 by Dr. John A. Manson and Dean Stout, the program has evolved through various phases, adapting to changes in the field while upholding the same quality and rigor that characterizes all of Lehigh University’s programs.

OUR VISION

Be the leader and globally recognized program in long-distance education for Polymer Science and Engineering, using modern tools and technology, fostering long-distance research collaboration, while addressing the needs of students and the polymer field, in a diverse and inclusive environment.
