University of Virginia - University Hospital Expansion

The class of 2020 was charged with designing a hospital expansion at The University of Virginia Health Systems in Charlottesville, VA., sponsored by Industry Advisory Council member, Walter P Moore. The 11-story structure connects directly into the adjacent existing hospital. Creativity was required to address the support of perimeter columns that cannot extend below the third floor. Students investigated multiple steel and concrete gravity and lateral systems before ultimately selecting the most appropriate systems to complete the full design of the structure.
