Experimental systems available in this laboratory include:
  • Cam-follower mechanism
  • Rotating mass
  • Shaker driven rim reinforced membrane
  • Impact driven visco-elastic plastic bar
  • Large gyroscope
  • System of masses and springs.
The experiments can respectively examine:
  • Cam-follower failure due to separation
  • Inertial forces and impacts
  • Two-plane balancing
  • Non-linear resonance and the jump effect
  • Dynamic stiffness and damping
  • Precession and nutation
  • Modal frequencies and shapes.
Experimental methods available include:
  • Sweep sine and impact excitation
  • Frequency analysis using sampled time signals
  • Discrete Fourier transforms.
Available equipment includes:
  • Accelerometers
  • Impact hammers
  • Impedance heads
  • Linear-variable displacement transformers
  • Optical and Hall effect transducers in combination with conditioning amplifiers and filters.

Data acquisition and analysis is done using both traditional methods such as taking manual readings from frequency analyzers and oscilloscope hardware and more modern techniques using LabView and Matlab virtual instrumentation.
