The graduate program in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (MEM) offers a challenging environment in which students work closely with faculty who are internationally renowned for their research.

Research Concentrations

Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics graduate students typically conduct research in teams on interdisciplinary projects in areas that include materials processing and manufacturing, fluid-solid interactions, composite structures, smart materials, integrity and reliability of engineering systems, integrated product development, biomechanics, mechatronics, energy and the environment, and thermal-fluid systems.

Research in the MEM department is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Golf Association, NASA, General Electric, the Office of Naval Research, the U.S. Army Research Office, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the National Research Council, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Electric Power Research Institute Inc., and a variety of other research foundations, utility companies, and agencies.
