Dr. Gabrielle String is an Assistant Professor at Lehigh University with a joint appointment in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Community and Population Health within Lehigh's College of Health. Her interests are in applied research and monitoring and evaluation of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) programs in developing countries and emergency contexts. String has experience coordinating field studies with local partners and cross-cultural teams, and has worked extensively in a microbiological laboratory environment for teaching and research.

Dr. String's current research is primarily focused on closing evidence gaps for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs in humanitarian and development contexts. She conducts both efficacy research in a laboratory setting and effectiveness evaluations with partners in the field. Her primary interests are in implementations of rural Water Safety Plan (WSP) programs, household safe water storage and container cleaning, and water treatment and surface disinfection implemented in outbreak response.

Previously, String served as a research assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Tufts University. Her primary research interests include evaluation of water and hygiene implementations to inform programming decisions in both development and emergency contexts. Dr. String has worked in the field and laboratory on projects evaluating safe water supply, water treatment, water storage, and surface disinfection. She has conducted research for organizations including UNICEF, charity: water, Solidarités International, USAID OFDA, and R2HC. She completed her BS at Clarkson University and her PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Tufts University, where her dissertation examined community and household level approaches to drinking water supply in low resource settings.
