Dr. Sause conducts integrated experimental and analytical research on innovative, self-centering, seismic-resistant steel and concrete structures; on the seismic performance of floor diaphragms; on structures with passive damping systems; on steel highway-bridge systems, including the application of high-performance steel (HPS) and the development of innovative steel bridge girders; on the fatigue performance of steel highway structures; and on the in-service performance of prestressed-concrete bridge girders. Two demonstration bridges based on his high-performance steel bridge research are now in service.

Dr. Sause has been principal or co-principal investigator on more than 60 research projects with budgets exceeding $50,000, and on 15 large-scale, multi-investigator research programs with budgets exceeding $1,000,000. He is the co-author of more than 90 peer-reviewed journal articles and more than 230 conference proceedings papers and technical reports.

As ATLSS Director, Dr. Sause oversees approximately $6 million in annual research expenditures and a staff of 25 support personnel and research scientists. Dr. Sause is a winner of the Raymond C. Reese Research Prize (American Society of Civil Engineers, 2009), J. James R. Croes Medal (American Society of Civil Engineers, 2007), the Charles C. Zollman Award (Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute, 2006), and the Raymond C. Reese Structural Research Award (American Concrete Institute, 1987).

Dr. Sause served as the founding director of Lehigh's Institute for Cyber Physical Infrastructure and Energy (I-CPIE) from 2018-2023.

Teaching and Service

Dr. Sause teaches courses in Structural Dynamics, Stability and Design of Steel Structures, Structural Analysis, and Earthquake Engineering. He has supervised or co-supervised 23 completed Ph.D. student dissertations and 39 M.S. student theses. Some of these completed Ph.D. students are now faculty members at Auburn University, Cal Poly Pomona, The University of Akron, University of Illinois, University of Notre Dame, Purdue University, and Princeton University, as well as at several universities overseas.
