Degree offered: M.S. in Photonics

Students in the graduate program in Photonics use the latest research techniques in several disciplines to seek new ways of using light in a variety of applications.

The Photonics graduate program is an important component of the educational activities of Lehigh's Center for Photonics and Nanoelectronics. It offers the following advantages:

  • Opportunities to perform basic and applied research at the frontier of optical communications and networking;
  • A solid foundation in physics, electrical engineering, and materials science and engineering;
  • Close ties to industry, including Corning and Sycamore Networks.

Faculty members associated with the Center are world-renowned for their research and maintain active projects in nonlinear optical effects, photo-induced phenomena, optical spectroscopy of integrated optical and semiconductor devices, glasses and other optical materials, fiber-based ultrasonics, optical sensing, and optical communications, among others.

A multidisciplinary M.S. in photonics imparts students with the knowledge and mastery required to design and test optical components and subsystems and to build and operate optical communications networks. It covers all the essential aspects of the field in sufficient detail to allow graduates to practice the photonics arts professionally. These aspects include nonlinear optics, optical materials, optical devices and components, and optical communications systems.

Those interested in continuing their research in photonics can do so by pursuing the Ph.D. in physics, electrical engineering, or materials science and engineering. In keeping with the program's strong multidisciplinary character, photonics students are supervised by professors from at least two different disciplines.
