Prof. Dan M. Frangopol is the inaugural holder of the Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering and Architecture. He is widely recognized as a leading educator and pioneer in the field of life-cycle engineering.
His main research interests are in the development and application of probabilistic concepts and methods to civil and marine engineering, including: structural reliability and probabilistic mechanics; life-cycle cost analysis; probability-based assessment, design, and multi-criteria life-cycle optimization of structures and infrastructure systems; structural health monitoring; life-cycle performance maintenance and management of structures and distributed infrastructure under extreme events (earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, and floods); risk-based assessment and decision making; multi-hazard risk mitigation; infrastructure sustainability and resilience to disasters; climate change adaptation.
Prof. Frangopol is the Founding President of the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety (IABMAS) and of the International Association for Life Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE), and Founding Vice-President of the International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure (ISHMII). He is the Past Vice-President of the International Association for Structural Safety and Reliability (IASSAR), and Past Vice-President of the Engineering Mechanics Institute of ASCE and Past Member of its Board of Governors. He is also the Founder and Inaugural Chair of the ASCE-SEI Technical Council on life-cycle performance, safety, reliability and risk of structural systems and of the IASSAR Technical Committee on life-cycle performance, cost and optimization. He has held numerous leadership positions in national and international professional societies including Chair of the Technical Activities Division of the 20,000+ members of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) of the ASCE, Chair of Executive Board of IASSAR, Chair of IABSE Working Commission 1 on Structural Performance, Safety and Analysis, and Chair of IFIP WG 7.5 on Reliability and Optimization of Structural Systems. He is an inaugural Fellow of SEI and EMI, and a Fellow of ACI, IABSE, ISHMII and JSPS.
Prof. Frangopol is a Member of the National Academy of Construction of the United States, an International Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea (Academy of Europe, London), a Foreign Associate of the Engineering Academy of Japan, a Foreign Member of the Royal Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts, an Honorary Member of the Romanian Academy, an Honorary Member of the Academy of Technical Sciences of Romania, and a Distinguished Member of ASCE. He holds 4 honorary doctorates, 14 honorary professorships, and 6 guest professorships. He is the recipient of four Lehigh University awards including the Lehigh University’s Hillman Faculty Award (2019), Lehigh University’s Hillman Award for Excellence in Graduate Advising (2016), Lehigh University’s Libsch Research Award (2013), and Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science’s Excellence in Research Scholarship and Leadership Award (2020).
Prof. Frangopol is the author/co-author of 4 books, 64 book chapters, over 450 articles in archival journals (including 14 award-winning papers from ASCE (Alfred Noble Prize, Croes Medal (twice), Moisseiff Award (twice), Reese Research Prize, State-of-the-Art of Civil Engineering Award (three times), and Wellington Prize (twice)), IABSE (OPA Award), Elsevier (Munro Prize), and European Council on Computing in Construction (Thorpe Medal), and 130 articles in ASCE journals), more than 600 papers in conference proceedings, and over 100 technical reports. He has edited/co-edited 56 books and 28 special issues of international journals. With an h-index of 97, an i10-index of 456, and more than 34,000 citations (Google Scholar, February 2023), his work has left an indelible mark on the field of structural engineering. He ranked as the 10th most-cited civil engineering author in the August 2019 Stanford University worldwide citation survey published in PLOS, and No. 1 (Lehigh University), No. 45 (United States), and No. 95 (World) on April 6, 2022, by Research.com on the list of top scientists in Engineering and Technology.
Prof. Frangopol has performed research in many major projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the Federal Highway Administration, the Office of Naval Research, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Department of Defense, the Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, the Colorado, Florida and Pennsylvania Departments of Transportation, the Transportation Research Board, among many others. Teaching and Service
Prior to his appointment at Lehigh, Frangopol served for 23 years on the faculty of the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has also served on the faculty at the Institute of Civil Engineering in Bucharest, Romania, and was a research associate at the University of Liège in Belgium.
He has supervised 50 Ph.D. and 56 M.Sc. students, 22 post-doctoral researchers, and hosted over 70 visiting scholars. 28 of his former students and post-doctoral researchers are university professors in the United States and abroad, and many are prominent in professional practice and research laboratories. He also served as visiting professor and external member of Ph.D. thesis committees at universities around the world, and presented numerous plenary keynotes at major conferences, and several named and distinguished lectures including the T.Y. Lin Lecture, the F.R. Khan Lecture, the K.C. Kavanagh Memorial Lecture, the Huangdao Academician Lecture, the Warren Lecture, and the Wenyuan Lecture. Prof. Frangopol is the Initiator and Organizer of the Fazlur R. Khan Distinguished Lecture Series at Lehigh University (2007-present), which has hosted 52 Distinguished Speakers around the world. He is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Structure and Infrastructure Engineering an international peer-reviewed journal launched in 2005 and accepted in 2007 by Thomson ISI for inclusion in the Science Citation Index.
