Summer 2023
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Dear friends and colleagues:

This end-of-summer issue of our bi-annual newsletter allows us the opportunity to look back on the significant accomplishments of the students, faculty, and alumni of Lehigh's Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (MEM) department.

This past academic year, our faculty secured exciting new research grants (from the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, and National Institutes of Health). Our students and young alumni are finding success establishing careers in academia, industry, and national laboratories. Some have won major early career awards. In the classroom, our faculty are creating innovative experiential learning opportunities that inspire our students. We highlight these accomplishments in this Summer 2023 newsletter.

This fall, we are welcoming a new MEM faculty member, Dr. Aditya Aiyer, who has joined our department as an Assistant Professor. Aditya received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and joins Lehigh from a postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University. Aditya brings his expertise in high fidelity (large eddy) simulations at the air-sea interface and its effects on renewable energy. He will be a valuable asset to several research teams at Lehigh’s Institute for Cyber Physical Infrastructure and Energy and in MEM. Aditya also plans to teach courses in computational fluid dynamics and related topics to augment our graduate and undergraduate curriculum.

We are always seeking ways to connect with alumni and friends of MEM at Lehigh. If you have news to share about work or ideas for creative educational programs or research collaborations, we would love to hear from you. It has been very exciting for me to lead MEM over the past 2+ years and cheer on our students, faculty, and staff to reach even greater heights. If you are appreciative of our efforts and the direction the department is heading, please consider making MEM your philanthropic priority this year.

FACULTY AND RESEARCH SPOTLIGHTS
MEM faculty win funding, lead innovative research programs
Professor Emeritus Sudhakar Neti is co-principal investigator on the DOE-supported project. The Lehigh Thermal Battery unveiling comes after three years of research and development. The technology is expected to play an important role in the decarbonization of energy-intensive industry. Read More >>
Led by Professor Alparslan Oztekin and Professor Emeritus Sudhakar Neti, Lehigh’s IAC was established in 2001 as part of the DOE’s nationwide Industrial Assessment Center Program to reduce energy and waste and enhance productivity for manufacturing plants in PA, NJ, and NY. The expansion into the mid-Atlantic will support manufacturing and job training in disadvantaged communities. Read More >>
TEACHING INNOVATIONS
Lehigh MEM leads in experiential learning

Commonly known as the senior lab, ME207 teaches mechanical engineering students to design and conduct experiments that bring theory to life. Assistant professor Ebru Demir teaches the mechatronics portion of the semester. Watch the video >>

Associate professor Hannah Dailey’s approach to teaching numerical methods mixes traditional solutions to well-known problems with open-ended challenges like Solitaire to help students make a fun and tangible connection. Watch the video >>
DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION
Spotlights on students, alumni, and faculty
Associate teaching professor Christina V. Haden describes a critical need for, "institutions to foster inclusive environments that encourage women to stay the course, especially in disciplines such as mechanical engineering that have historically attracted a less diverse population of students." The annual symposium is ABET’s flagship event for accreditation, assessment, and the global exchange of best practices in STEM education. Read More >>
Zemichael Gebeyehu ’24, Mika Asfaw ’24, and Yafet Menjetta ’23 were part of a team that won first place in the team presentation and design category. Their Balsa wood glider design and build impressed judges with its custom, manually manufactured airfoils for the wings. Read More >>
ALUMNI NEWS

Steven N. Rodriguez ’18 PhD is a research scientist at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. Rodriguez was selected for the fellowship based on his exemplary achievements, support of diversity, equity, and inclusion in his community, and commitment to industrial and applied mathematics, computational science, and data science. Read more >>

Chris Zadra '16 '17G is the Drones for Whale Research Program manager for Ocean Alliance. Zadra’s work is revolutionizing how researchers study vulnerable or hard-to-study species, like whales, by reducing stress from tagging activities. Read more >>
Chris Kauzmann '13 '14G was appointed as interim director of the lab, which offers direct support to Lehigh founders by helping students, faculty, staff and recent alumni launch companies. Read more >>
STUDENT NEWS
Liam Magargal ’21 will continue advancing his research in model reduction for computational fluid dynamics. Magaral is one of only 165 individuals from 68 institutions nationwide selected by the Department of Defense for the fellowship in 2023. Read More >>
Zemichael Gebeyehu '24 is harnessing a lifelong passion for all things space-related to work with fellow undergraduates on NASA's CubeSat Launch Initiative and the University Rover Challenge. LUSI comprises a diverse mix of first-year students to seniors across its 20 members. Read More >>
As an undergraduate, Bryce Erdman ’23 completed an internship as a reliability engineer with PPL, studied abroad in Germany, traveled to Denmark as a Martindale Scholar, joined the Lehigh Baja SAE team, and tutored middle school students with Lehigh's Community Service Office. Read More >>
