On October 5, Professor Dan M. Frangopol will give the Kececioglu Memorial Lecture hosted by the Department of Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arizona (UA).

Frangopol, the inaugural Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering and Architecture in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Lehigh, will discuss “Life-Cycle Multi-Objective Optimization of Structures and Infrastructure Systems under Uncertainty.” More details about the event are available on the lecture webpage.

Frangopol is a world-renowned expert in structural reliability, optimization, and life-cycle engineering of civil and marine structures. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has authored/co-authored four books, more than 60 book chapters, and over 450 articles in archival journals, including 14 prize-winning papers. Frangopol is Founding President of the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety (IABMAS) and the International Association for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE).

The lecture series recognizes the career achievements and legacy of the late professor Dimitri Kececioglu, according to the UA website. “A Fulbright scholar and pioneer in reliability engineering, Kececioglu taught in the University of Arizona department of aerospace and mechanical engineering for more than 40 years. Over the course of his storied career, he published more than 150 papers and authored eight books. He was a fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Society for Quality and an award-winning educator.”

Frangopol has delivered several named lectures, including the T.Y. Lin Lecture (Iguazu Falls, Brazil, IABMAS 2016), the F.R. Khan Lecture (Tokyo, Japan, IALCCE 2014), the K.C. Kavanagh Annual Memorial Structural Engineering Lecture (Pennsylvania State University, University Park, 2018),  the inaugural J. R. Choudhury (JRC) Annual Memorial Lecture (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka, 2021), the Huangdao Academician Lecture (China University of Petroleum, Qingdao, 2019), the Warren Lecture (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis 2012), and the Wenyuan Lecture (Tongji University, Shanghai 2012).

He is the recipient of several medals, awards, and prizes from ASCE, IABSE, IASSAR, SAE, and other professional organizations. He has served as a consultant or advisor to companies in North America, Asia, and Europe.

Frangopol holds four honorary doctorates and 14 honorary professorships from major universities. He has achieved membership in eight academies: the National Academy of Construction (USA), the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Academy of Engineering of Mexico, the Academia Europaea (Academy of Europe, London), the Engineering Academy of Japan, the Royal Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts, the Romanian Academy, and the Academy of Technical Sciences of Romania. He is a distinguished member of ASCE.
