The Catalysis Society of Metropolitan New York Annual Spring 2025 Symposium was held March 12 on the Lehigh University campus. This is an annual northeastern spring symposium that focuses on the fundamentals and applications of catalysts. Catalysts, which are materials that control and accelerate chemical reactions with applications in sustainable technology, biotechnology, energy, chemicals, environmental remediation, pharmaceuticals, etc., account for approximately 25% of the U.S. gross national product (GNP).

About 75 participants came from numerous northeastern universities (including Princeton University, Rutgers University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Barnard College of Columbia University, New York University, The City College of New York, State University of New York - Binghamton, Syracuse University, Lehigh University, University of Delaware, University of Maryland, and University of Virginia) and several regional companies.

Additionally, about 30 poster competition presentations were made by graduate students from the participating universities that were judged by a panel of scientists. The top three posters were selected for awards:

  • 1st place: Erin M. Sobchinsky (Lehigh University, Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering)

Co-authors: Prof. Israel E. Wachs (ChBE)

  • 2nd place: Eli M. Ream (Lehigh University, Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering)

Co-authors: Joseph Thompson (ChBE), Prof. Srinivas Rangarajan (ChBE), Prof. Israel E. Wachs (ChBE)

  • 3rd place: Josh Miller (Princeton University, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering)
