Elsevier 'Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids: X,' leading journal of glass science, recognizes Lehigh MSE professor who received its N.F. Mott Award in 2020

A special issue of the Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, published by Elsevier, pays tribute to Himanshu Jain, Lehigh University’s T.L. Diamond Distinguished Chair in Engineering and Applied Science and Professor of Materials Science and Engineering.

Jain, a prolific researcher in glass science, received the journal’s prestigious Neville F. Mott Award in 2020 for his contributions “to understanding the electrical properties of glasses, chalcogenide glasses, bioactive glasses, and laser-induced crystallization.”

The special issue features papers relating to these and other related topics, with a number of collaborators having connections to Jain and Lehigh, including visiting researchers and current and former members of his research teams over the many years he directed the NSF’s International Materials Institute for New Functionality in Glass and in his current role as founding director of the Institute for Functional Materials and Devices (I-FMD).

“It is gratifying to see that the authors of the 21 articles (from 16 countries) in this issue have continued to advance these subjects well beyond my contributions, offering additional opportunities for me to learn new insights and advancements that were left undiscovered,” Jain writes in the issue’s preface.

Jain is the author of 12 patents and more than 400 research publications, and editor or author of 10 books or special journal issues on glass science and technology. Over his 44-year career, his work has been funded by agencies including the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy’s Office of Basic Energy Sciences as well as private companies.

“Glass is uniquely positioned to address several of the Grand Challenges facing the society today,” writes Jain, “giving hope as well as challenging future glass researchers to ensure that their insightful science will yield positive impact on the society within a reasonable timeframe.”
