Date: Wednesday, May 1, 2024

Time: 9:30-10:30AM

Location: Health Science Technology Building (HST), Forum Room 101

This event features Shu Yang, who will talk about "Design and Manufacturing of Geometric Materials for Efficient Decarbonization", as part of the Lehigh University Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering's Spring 2024 Colloquium Seminar Series.

Abstract

Our living environment plays a critical role in the quality of our life and well-being. To combat greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change, it requires new solutions that are low cost, energy efficient and highly scalable. I will discuss the design and manufacturing of scalable, geometric materials for efficient decarbonization, including 3D printable carbon absorbing and storage concrete that is lightweight yet having high mechanical strength, and design and patterning of moisture wicking, desiccant-coated kirigami fins for energy efficient heat exchangers in cooling.

About the Speaker

Shu Yang is a Joseph Bordogna Professor of Engineering and Applied Science, Chair of the Department of Materials Science & Engineering, and Professor of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at University of Pennsylvania (Penn). Her group is interested in synthesis, fabrication, and assembly of soft and hybrid materials; dynamic tuning of their sizes, shapes and assembled structures, and use of geometry to create highly flexible, super-conformable, shape changing and energy efficient materials. Yang received her B.S. degree from Fudan University, and Ph. D. degree from Cornell University. She worked at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies as a Member of Technical Staff before joining Penn. She was recognized by ACS Langmuir lectureship, Inventor of the Year at Penn, George H. Heilmeier Faculty Award for Excellence in Research from Penn Engineering. She is a Fellow of Materials Research Society (MRS), American Chemical Society (ACS), American Physical Society (APS), Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), and National Academy of Inventors.
