On December 3, Professor Dan M. Frangopol will give the inaugural J. R. Choudhury (JRC) Annual Memorial Lecture, hosted virtually by the BUET (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology) Alumni Association of Bangladesh.
Frangopol, the inaugural Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering and Architecture in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Lehigh, will discuss “Risk, Resilience and Sustainability of Civil Infrastructure under Lifetime Hazards including Climate Change.” The online event, which will be streamed via Facebook Live, begins at 9 am EST (8 pm Bangladesh Standard Time).
The JRC lecture has been established to memorialize the work and vision of National Professor of Bangladesh Jamilur Reza Choudhury, an internationally recognized civil engineer, educator, researcher, and administrator. JRC, as he was known, “made a great impact on science and technical education, the engineering profession, and national development, particularly the development of infrastructure and IT sectors of Bangladesh,” until his death in 2020. During his career, he served as vice chancellor for BRAC University and the University of Asia Pacific and was awarded the prestigious Ekushe Padak in the category of science and technology.
Frangopol, a world-renowned expert in structural reliability, optimization, and life-cycle engineering of civil and marine structures, was invited to deliver the lecture by Professor Kauser Jahan, who heads the civil and environmental engineering department at Rowan University and is a relative of Choudhury.
Over the course of his distinguished career, Frangopol has authored/co-authored three books, more than 60 book chapters, and over 430 articles in archival journals, including 11 prize-winning papers. He is Founding President of the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety (IABMAS) and the International Association for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE).
He is the recipient of several medals, awards, and prizes from ASCE, IABSE, IASSAR, SAE, and other professional organizations. He has served as a consultant or advisor to companies in North America, Asia, and Europe.
Frangopol holds four honorary doctorates and 14 honorary professorships from major universities. He is an elected member of the US National Academy of Construction, a foreign member of the Academy of Europe (London), a foreign associate of the Engineering Academy of Belgium, an honorary member of the Romanian Academy, an honorary member of the Romanian Academy of Technical Sciences, and a distinguished member of ASCE.
