Dr. Ralphs' research focuses mainly on various aspects of large-scale computation and optimization. His research spans theory, computation, and application, with an aim of bridging the gap between theory and practice. His current research projects explore the theoretical and computational aspects of solving large-scale optimization problems through the exploitation of sophisticated mathematical techniques and high-performance computing technologies.

Dr. Ralphs is co-founder and director of the Computational Optimization Research at Lehigh (COR@L) Laboratory, chair of the the INFORMS Computing Society, and co-chair of Lehigh's Research Computing Steering Committee. Courses taught by Dr. Ralphs include computational methods, discrete optimization, nonlinear optimization, financial optimization, graphs and network flows, and algorithms in systems engineering.
