Lehigh MEM chair takes on editorial leadership role at international journal focused on sustainable energy research

Arindam Banerjee, the Paul B. Reinhold Professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics at Lehigh University, has been named an editor-in-chief of Renewable Energy, an international research journal published by Elsevier.

Banerjee will share editorial leadership responsibilities with Nidia Caetano of the School of Engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto in Portugal.

Renewable Energy publishes research spanning the development and application of renewable energy technologies, including solar, wind, and marine energy systems. The publication has a Journal Impact Factor of 9.1 and is ranked in the top quartile (Q1) of journals in its field.

Banerjee has served on the journal's editorial team since 2021, initially as a subject editor for ocean and wind energy and more recently as an executive editor, handling papers across eight subject areas: Energy Storage, Geothermal, PV, Energy Meteorology, Ocean Energy, Hydropower, Wind Energy, and Renewable Energy Control & Grid Integration.

An expert in experimental fluid dynamics, Banerjee is the founding co-director of the U.S. Department of Energy–funded Atlantic Marine Energy Center. He has also served as the Associate Director of Lehigh’s Center for Advancing Community Electrification Solutions (ACES), which focuses on developing efficient, reliable, and sustainable energy systems for communities.

“This appointment recognizes Arindam’s expertise and leadership in renewable energy research,” says Shalinee Kishore, Iacocca Chair Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of ACES. “His new role is an opportunity to help shape the direction of research in a field that's increasingly important to our energy future.”

Banerjee’s research includes marine renewable energy technologies, with a focus on harnessing energy from rivers, tides, waves, and offshore wind; fluid dynamics in extreme environments (hydrodynamic instabilities in inertial confinement fusion); and computational pulmonary therapeutics (drug delivery in human lungs under various mechanical ventilation conditions).
