The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) honored Lehigh University alumnus Craig Benson '89 for his contributions to the geotechnical and geoenvironmental industry.
Benson, recently selected as the 13th Dean of the University of Virginia's School of Engineering and Applied Science, received the A. Ivan Johnson Outstanding Achievement Award for his work with the ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock.
Benson earned his B.S. in civil and environmental engineering from Lehigh before receiving his masters and doctorate in civil engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He was chair of both the civil and environmental engineering and geological engineering departments at the University of Wisconsin. Benson will begin his new position at Virginia on July 1, 2015.
Founded in 1898, ASTM International is one of the world's largest voluntary standards developing organizations. The non-profit company, according to its website, serves as "a forum for the development and publication of international voluntary consensus standards for materials, products, systems and services." ASTM International is home to over 30,000 members across 150 countries worldwide.
