If you’re working on a project, or have one you’ve recently completed, it’s time to show it off.
The Expo is nearly here.
The 2nd annual Lehigh University Expo is Saturday, April 6. Held at Building C on Mountaintop Campus, the event is meant to showcase the projects of undergraduate and professional master’s students from across the university.
It can be finished work or it can be a work in progress. The purpose of the expo is to show other students and faculty—and since this year’s event will be held on Candidate’s Day, prospective students and their families—the range of projects, programs, and opportunities that are available at Lehigh.
Last year’s inaugural event drew 600 participants and attracted at least as many attendees. Students came from all four colleges and their presentations included posters, project demos, videos, readings, and music.
“It’s such a cool, collaborative space,” says Cassidy Drost ’20, a biology major, who presented her Creative Inquiry project. “It was neat to see how many projects there were and how different they all were. It was also a great place to make connections. I saw what teams were really good at, and who I could go to for advice for aspects of my own project. And I was able to reconnect with past professors about what I’m doing now, which is really important for letters of recommendation.”
Drost’s team is developing urinary tract infection test strips to improve maternal health in Sierra Leone; the project and the team are now part of the Global Social Impact Fellowship (GSIF). Her teammate, Naakesh Gomanie ’20, an IDEAS major, says the Expo gave him the opportunity to hone his presentation skills.
“I was not very good at public speaking, and the Expo allowed me to practice presenting and conducting myself professionally,” says Gomanie.
It also gave him the chance to introduce his project to his friends and brothers in Sigma Phi Delta, the professional and social fraternity of engineers.
“They were like, ‘Wow, this is pretty cool,’” Gomanie says. “They didn’t know what I was doing, and they didn’t know they could do it, too. And now we have six or seven of them in GSIF because of the Expo. It’s just a really great way to see what’s on campus and get involved.”
This year’s event will take place from 12:30 to 3 p.m. in bay C2, in Building C classrooms, and beneath tents that will be set up outside. Shuttle buses will run throughout the afternoon from the Asa Packer campus to the Expo, and food will be provided.
