Dan M. Frangopol, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Emeritus, and Inaugural Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering and Architecture, Emeritus, at Lehigh University, was recognized by the University of Rostock during the 21st International Probabilistic Workshop, held September 10-12, 2025, in Germany.
Frangopol delivered the conference’s opening lecture and was presented with a commemorative medal created for the University of Rostock’s 600th anniversary in recognition of his pioneering contributions to life-cycle engineering of civil and naval structures.
An internationally renowned scholar, Frangopol has received five honorary doctorates and 14 honorary professorships from leading universities worldwide. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Construction and a foreign member of numerous international academies, including those of Canada, Japan, Mexico, Belgium, and Romania, as well as Academia Europaea.
Frangopol is widely credited with establishing the field of life-cycle civil engineering. He has authored more than 500 peer-reviewed journal articles and serves as founding president of two major international associations in the field. His influence extends globally through his scholarship, professional leadership, and mentorship of generations of civil engineers.
