Lehigh University professor Himanshu Jain has received a Fulbright Specialist Program award to collaborate on global engineering education and materials science research initiatives in Spain. The award, granted by the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, supports short-term international knowledge exchange and the development of engineering education partnerships.
Advancing Engineering Education and Research in Spain
Jain, the T.L. Diamond Distinguished Chair in Engineering and Applied Science and professor of materials science and engineering, is working with Institute of Ceramics and Glass researchers at the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid, on a project focused on knowledge exchange and partnership-building through engineering education activities. The Fulbright Specialist Program is designed to facilitate these high-level collaborations between U.S. experts and overseas institutions to address global challenges and foster institutional links.
“International collaborations like this create opportunities to exchange ideas across disciplines and cultures while advancing research and education in materials science,” Jain says. “I’m excited to work with colleagues in Spain to explore new applications of ceramics and glass research, such as glass fertilizers to overcome ground water contamination by conventional fertilizers, and to build connections that can lead to long-term impact for students and researchers at both institutions.”
Expertise in Glass Science and Sustainable Materials
Jain is an internationally recognized researcher in glass science and materials engineering and his work spans glass structure, bio-inspired materials, and the development of sustainable materials for energy and environmental applications. He is also widely known for building research partnerships and new models of doctoral education based on use-inspired research across diverse disciplines and institutions.
Fostering Global Academic Partnerships
Fulbright Specialist recipients are selected based on academic and professional achievement, leadership in their field, and their potential to foster long-term international collaboration. According to the State Department, more than 400 U.S. citizens participate in this prestigious program each year to share expertise and build capacity at host institutions abroad as well as at their home institution.
