Schmalzle, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering and mechanics, will appear in the 2017 College Championship, scheduled to air from February 13-24, 2017. He was one of 15 students selected to appear in the tournament.
"It's an honor to be the first person to represent Lehigh on College Jeopardy!," said Schmalzle. "On the show, most of the contestants are Ivy Leaguers or from big state schools, so it's exciting to have the opportunity to put Lehigh in the same discussion as those schools."
Schmalzle will head to Los Angeles in January over winter break to participate in the event.
"I was shocked when I got the call," he explained. "But I'm definitely excited. I love Los Angeles and it's going to be great to go back out there again."
Lehigh will be the 10th Pennsylvania school to participate in Jeopardy's annual college tournament, joining Bryn Mawr College, Carnegie Mellon University, Dickinson College, Muhlenberg College, Penn State University, Temple University, The University of Pennsylvania, The University of Pittsburgh and Ursinus College.
Only one student from Pennsylvania has claimed victory in the show's past 27 college competitions -- Carnegie Mellon's Kermin Fleming, who won the title in 2004 during tournament held at the University of Pittsburgh.
Last season's winner was University of Southern Cal's Sam Deutch. Pittsburgh's Sarah Dubnik earned second runner-up honors in the final.
The winner of the Jeopardy! College Championship is awarded $100,000 in cash, with $50,000 and $25,000 going to the first and second runners-up, respectively.
