Lehigh Engineering community remembers ATLSS IT manager, a CEE alum, for his dedication, kindness
Peter Y. Bryan, 56, manager of computer and information technology at Lehigh’s Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems (ATLSS) Engineering Research Center, passed away November 10.

Peter was a civil engineering alum (Class of 1988) and had a fruitful 32-year career at the university, working closely with ATLSS director Richard Sause and many other faculty members and staff. Peter was also beloved by students, past and present.

“Peter was a tremendously caring, helpful, and thoughtful person who enabled all of us to be successful in our work,” said Sause. “Each of us can recall times when he helped us through a difficult problem or situation. He was always willing to help. We will miss him deeply."

Faculty, students, and staff have shared their memories of Peter—recalling his kindness, generosity, good humor, and wealth of knowledge—on an online memorial board.

“Peter was a fixture of the civil and environmental engineering family at Lehigh for more than three decades,” said Shamim Pakzad, associate professor and interim chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. “He touched us all not just professionally but also personally over these years. His can-do attitude combined with a genuine desire to say ‘yes’ to help everyone made him the person that we all loved and adored. We are dealing with his loss by following his example: one day at a time.”

During his Lehigh career, Peter was deeply involved in supporting programs, including CHOICES and PreLUsion, that introduce the concepts of engineering to young people and generate excitement for the discipline. He also served on the university’s Employee Relations Advisory Committee (ERAC).
