A recognition celebration for the establishment of the Carole and Arnold '68G Marder Graduate Endowment Fund was held at the campus' HST Conference Center on 11 December 2025.

In attendance were leaders in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) along with other members of the university faculty and administration. All to honor the renowned Professor for his holistic work to develop graduate students professionally and personally to have both successful careers and loving family lives.

Dr. Marder served as a role model quintessential renaissance professor having worked in industry, wrote THE book on his field (zinc coatings), published multiple papers in peer reviewed journals, led the Energy Research Center at LU, secured industry and government research funding, taught undergraduate and graduate school classes while also being active in ASM, the fields international technical society.

Arnie was also the developer of people and leaders along with his wife, Carole, who passed in 2023. Together they ensured personal development occurred and that all students were prepared for success. This often involved meals with his family in his home. He did anything he could to help his graduate students. He even, on occasion, was the pitcher and first baseman on the MSE championship softball team.

All of the MSE Graduate students who had him as his advisor have indeed succeeded and they continue to have a strong network amongst themselves.  All of them worked to fund the Endowment along with other benefactors.

The scholarship effort, led by John DuPont, who was also a graduate student under Dr. Marder and then a full professor in the MSE department along with multiple former students spoke on the impact Dr. Marder had on their technical development yet more so on how Carole and Arnie helped them develop as a person.

The Carole and Arnold '68G Marder Graduate Endowment Fund will now carry forward to support U.S. graduate students studying metallurgy in the MSE Department. As such, the legacy of technical, professional and personal development will continue for the next generation.
