The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics has recently welcomed a new faculty member, Jianxing Sun, who joined the department in Fall 2025 as a tenure-track assistant professor.

"We are pleased to welcome Jianxing Sun to MEM,” says Arindam Banerjee, Paul B. Reinhold Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics and chair of the MEM department. “His expertise strengthens our department’s core competencies in thermodynamics and heat transfer. His research program addresses pressing real-world needs related to energy utilization for thermal management, and his teaching contributions align with our program’s emphasis on hands-on and applied engineering education.”

Before coming to Lehigh, Dr. Sun was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Biointerfaces Institute at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis in 2022. His research experimentally investigates the thermo-fluid and interfacial physics governing phase change in multiphase energy systems. Building on these fundamental insights, he utilizes functional materials and device-level design to enhance system efficiency and enable innovative thermal management strategies. His work finds applications in data center cooling, waste heat recovery, and cryogenic cooling. Dr. Sun is passionate about integrating cutting-edge research discoveries and real-world applications into the classroom. His teaching interests are in thermal sciences, where he plans on teaching the undergraduate Thermodynamics Laboratory (ME 207) and the Introduction to Heat Transfer (ME 321) course.
