A special issue of Structure and Infrastructure Engineering has been published in honor of the journal’s founder, Dan M. Frangopol, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Emeritus, and Inaugural Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering and Architecture, Emeritus, at Lehigh University. Titled “Life-cycle of structures and infrastructure systems: Bridging the gap between theory and practice,” the issue appears in Volume 21, Issues 11–12, and coincides with the journal’s 20th anniversary.
Frangopol, who joined Lehigh’s faculty in 2006, is widely credited with establishing the field of life-cycle civil engineering. As the guest editorial that opens the special issue notes, Frangopol “has made significant and fundamental contributions to structural system reliability analysis, structural optimisation and life-cycle engineering” and played a seminal role in advancing life-cycle engineering as a core framework for civil engineering practice.
The 400-page special issue includes 22 peer-reviewed papers by former students, collaborators, and colleagues from around the world, reflecting the breadth of Frangopol’s influence on research spanning infrastructure reliability, resilience, sustainability, and risk-informed decision-making. He founded Structure and Infrastructure Engineering in 2005 and served as editor-in-chief for two decades, guiding its growth into a leading international journal in the field.
