Through the Iacocca International Internship Program, environmental engineer Emily Buchanan ’25 gains hands-on experience while making a cultural connection

Environmental engineer Emily Buchanan ’25 spent the past summer in Moldova working with EcoContact, a nonprofit focused on environmental sustainability and policy. Through Lehigh's Iacocca International Internship Program (IIIP), she contributed to efforts aligning Moldova’s environmental regulations with European Union standards, gaining firsthand experience in international policy work.

Her internship offered a unique opportunity to apply her technical knowledge in a global context, collaborating with professionals addressing pressing environmental challenges. The experience broadened her perspective on sustainability while demonstrating how engineering students can integrate international opportunities into their academic journey.

Moldova is hoping to become a legitimate EU country within the next few years, and part of that means conforming to strict European Union environmental standards. It was really rewarding to be involved with such meaningful work, and it definitely wasn't what I was expecting when I started looking at internships.
