Professor Arindam Banerjee has been appointed as the Paul B. Reinhold Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, effective January 1, 2024, in recognition of his research accomplishments and contributions to the Lehigh Engineering community.
The Reinhold professorships were established in memory of Paul B. Reinhold (Class of 1913), a distinguished Pittsburgh civic leader and industrialist, by his wife, Claire D. Reinhold.
Professor Banerjee, who joined Lehigh in 2012, conducts research in multi-scale thermo-fluid-dynamics with emphasis on energy systems and biological systems. He was named the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Mechanics in 2021.
Professor Banerjee is also a co-director of the Atlantic Marine Energy Center (AMEC), a research hub funded by the Department of Energy, that is developing and accelerating technology for marine energy converters that will power the blue economy. He recently teamed up with Shalinee Kishore, Iacocca Chair Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and faculty across four of Lehigh’s colleges to secure National Science Foundation National Research Traineeship (NRT) funding to initiate an interdisciplinary PhD program on Stakeholder Engaged Energy Decarbonization for Energy Futures. The award is a success for Lehigh, with NSF NRT Integrated Graduate Research Traineeship funding last awarded in 1999.
Professor Banerjee is associate editor for ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering and serves as the subject editor for the Elsevier journal Renewable Energy, managing the offshore renewable energy portfolio. He was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2021.
