Electrical engineering alum recognized for advancing the future of microchips and nanoscale science

Electrical engineering alumnus and Stanford University professor H.-S. Philip Wong PhD’88 has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) for the Class of 2026. Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer, honoring those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education.

Wong, who serves as the Willard R. and Inez Kerr Bell Professor in Stanford’s School of Engineering, was recognized for his “contributions to nanoscale semiconductor device technology.” His research focuses on translating scientific discoveries into practical technologies, spanning nanoscale science, semiconductor technology, solid-state devices, and electronic imaging. His current work explores topics including carbon electronics, 2D layered materials, brain-inspired computing, and 3D system integration.

Beyond his academic role, Wong is a prominent figure in the microelectronics ecosystem. He co-leads the Microelectronics Commons California-Pacific-Northwest AI Hardware Hub and served on the U.S. Department of Commerce Industrial Advisory Committee. Wong’s career includes significant industry leadership, having spent 16 years at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center before joining Stanford in 2004. More recently, he served as the vice president of corporate research at TSMC from 2018 to 2020 and continues to serve as the company's chief scientist in an advisory capacity.

In reflecting on his career, Wong has expressed gratitude for his advisor, Marvin White, who supervised his doctoral studies at Lehigh. To honor this legacy of mentorship, Wong recently helped spearhead the Professor Marvin H. White ECE Experiential Learning Endowment Fund at Lehigh to support student engagement in research and conferences.

According to The Stanford Daily, Wong noted that his election to the NAE brings a “greater sense of purpose” and a responsibility to help carry out its mission. He will be formally inducted into the NAE during its annual meeting this fall.
