Annual event concludes a semester-long collaboration focused on design, manufacturing, and STEM mentorship

On the final day of spring classes, more than 100 Lehigh University mechanical engineering students and roughly 90 local students gathered in the Broughal Middle School gymnasium for the annual Lehigh/Victaulic Race Day. The event featured 32 custom-built race cars designed and manufactured as part of the ME 240 course led David C. Angstadt, a teaching full professor in mechanical engineering.

Throughout the semester, undergraduates worked with the Broughal eighth-graders to apply manufacturing techniques, including CAD modeling, CNC machining, and injection molding. This partnership allows the middle school students to engage with engineering concepts and interact with college-level mentors.

The program is supported by Victaulic, a global leader in piping systems and a long-term partner of Lehigh’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics.
