Dr. Emily McGuinness joins Lehigh University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Her research focuses on designing advanced polymer-based materials for sustainable energy and environmental applications, including passive radiative cooling technologies, hybrid polymer-inorganic materials, photonic structures, and scalable manufacturing methods. By combining expertise in materials science, optics, and polymer engineering, her work aims to develop innovative materials that improve energy efficiency and address global sustainability challenges.
Dr. McGuinness earned her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2021 after completing dual bachelor's degrees in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Textile Engineering at North Carolina State University. Prior to joining Lehigh, she was an NSF Engineering Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota. Her research has been recognized with numerous honors, including the 2024 L'Oréal USA For Women in Science Fellowship.
