Abstract

In this paper, the existing vacuum in small scale community approaches to recycling plastics is highlighted and how they can enable a scaled implementation of plastics recycling is discussed. A greater understanding of these approaches will establish the need to implement small-scale processes that benefit the environment and create economic opportunities to support the livelihoods of such communities. Considerations for implementing these small-scale processes are discussed.

About Andy Fugh

Andy Fugh is a junior studying mechanical engineering in the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering. He has spent the past year doing research under Ganesh Balasubramanian and Khanjan Mehta, through the Global Social Impact Fellowship. His research focuses on studying means of implementing community scale plastic recycling methods in low income and low resource settings. Additionally, he has been designing appropriate and rugged plastic recycling machinery, and studying business models through which to implement these machines.
