Abstract
This research, conducted by Kailun Wang, an undergraduate independent researcher at the Lehigh University's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and advised by Prof. Rosa Zheng, focuses on developing an underwater acoustic communication system. The project, running from September 2023 to May 2024, aims to create a robust communication system for use in the RoboSub Competition. The system comprises an underwater acoustic locator pinger and a multi-channel receiver, designed to continuously transmit signals when submerged. This technology is particularly geared towards mooring recovery, enabling divers or Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to detect and home in on the pinger's unique acoustic signals, thus facilitating navigation and precise beacon location.
Key advancements made in this project include the programming of the Tiva C series microcontroller to generate precise frequency Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signals ranging from 25kHz to 40kHz in 5kHz increments. This includes a timed disable feature for enhanced efficiency. Furthermore, the system features a user-friendly switch for frequency selection and a water-activated switch to improve usability. The signal strength and clarity have been notably improved by redesigning a Class D amplifier with a transformer, resulting in a higher voltage gain.
Additionally, the acoustic pinger has been successfully integrated into a compact, durable, and waterproof aluminum housing. Current efforts are focused on a low noise amplifier (LNA) design that effectively filters extraneous underwater noise, and designing a cost-effective transducer tailored for specific frequency ranges to optimize system performance. Another significant aspect of the project is the development of a multi-channel receiver utilizing Angle-of-Arrival (AOA) estimation techniques, which will enable more precise determination of the signal's origin, thereby enhancing navigational capabilities.
