Graduate Degrees offered: M.S. in Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering (M.S.)

The graduate program in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (MEM) offers a challenging environment in which students work closely with faculty who are internationally renowned for their research.

Key features of the program include:

  • A comprehensive curriculum that accommodates students pursuing the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees;
  • Strong research collaborations with industrial partners and with faculty from other countries;
  • Unique laboratory facilities

Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics graduate students typically conduct research in teams on interdisciplinary projects in areas that include materials processing and manufacturing, fluid-solid interactions, composite structures, smart materials, integrity and reliability of engineering systems, integrated product development, biomechanics, mechatronics, energy and the environment, and thermal-fluid systems.

Collaborations with external research organizations include the Air Force Research Laboratory, Air Products, American Museum of Natural History, Brookhaven National Laboratory, DuPont, Electric Power Research Institute, MD Anderson Cancer Center, NASA Langley, National Energy Technology Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, and University of Zurich.

External Funding

Funding support from major national agencies and industry leaders including National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, Office of Naval Research, Advanced Research Projects Agency, Intel, Army Research Office, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and others; winners of National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships have joined our department.
