Most Bioengineering courses offered by the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science are listed with one of three modalities:

  • On campus
  • Remote
  • Flex (FLX) or Hybrid

For each of these courses, a brief description of how the course will be conducted is provided below. Some courses, such as independent study, research, thesis, etc. are arranged individually between the student and instructor.

While we do not anticipate frequest changes, if a change is made, it will also be evident in the official listing on BANNER; in these cases, students should contact the department or instructor for an update to the “brief description."

If a course is not listed, please contact the department and/or instructor directly.

Spring 2021 registration info – Bioengineering & Biocomputational Engineering

Juniors - capstone

  • The course numbers have changed for capstone. The new numbers for TE 211/212 are BIOE 211/212. Please register for BIOE 211.

  • Prerequisites: BIOE 110 and BIOE 210 and (CHE 031 or MECH 003 or ECE 081). BIOE 210 and BIOE 211 may be taken concurrently.

Juniors and seniors
BIOE labs
- To take these courses in Spring 2021, you must attend in person!

  • BIO 331, 343, and 357 require instructor permission, enabling us to manage enrollment.  Please contact the course instructor for the override.

  • Note: BIOE 331 will not be offered in Spring 2022. Therefore, juniors and seniors in the Bioelectronics track must take 331 in Spring 2021.

Juniors and seniors

  • After you’ve registered for your classes, run a degree audit in Banner to verify that you’ve met all the requirements that you think you’ve met. If there are any discrepancies, please contact your adviser. This is especially important for seniors, since you don’t want to delay your graduation!

Thermodynamics - Bioengineering version

  • We are going to be offering a Bioengineering version of thermodynamics this spring, which will be rostered as BIOE 296. Instructor: Professor Ines Séabra (ijs218@lehigh.edu). Students in the Biomechanics & Biomaterials track have the option to fulfill their thermo requirement by taking BIOE 296, MAT 205, or ME 104.  Students in the Biopharmaceutical track have the option to fulfill their thermo requirement by taking BIOE 296 or CHE 210.  Students in the Bioelectronics track may take this course as a technical elective.

  • Prerequisites: Math 22 and PHY 11 and CHM 31.
CHM 31 and BIOS 296 may be taken concurrently.

Biopharm track students: Students in this track are required to take CHE 211 (junior spring) or BIOE 349 (junior/senior fall). CHE 210 is a prerequisite for CHE 211 per the course catalog. However, if you have completed BIOS 296, it will count as a substitute prerequisite for CHE 211; you will just need to contact the CHE 211 course instructor for an override.

Sophomores

  • We are not offering BIOE 20 this spring. Even though it is listed on the typical four-year schedule in the course catalog for the sophomore spring, it is a technical elective and not a required course.

All students

Technical electives: Course descriptions are in the course catalog, unless otherwise noted.

Math intensive elective: The course catalog states that students must take one of the following courses: BIOE 315/321/341/345/349 or ECE 337.  Of these courses, the following will be offered in Spring 2021:

BIOE 315: Biostatistics

BIOE 345: Quantitative Biology

300-level BIOE elective: In addition to the math-intensive elective described above, students must take 9 credits of BioE technical electives. At least 3 of the 9 credits must be BIOE coursework at the 300-level or higher. 300-level BIOE courses that will be offered in Spring 2021, in addition to BIOE 315 & 345, are:

BIOE 318: Soft Materials, Rheology and Characterization. New!

BIOE 366: Neural Engineering

BIOE 369: Advanced Topics in Regulatory Affairs. New!

Other BIOE/BIOC technical electives

BIOE 242: Undergraduate Research

  • If you are interested in doing research, contact professors to see if they have openings in their labs.  Your adviser may be able to provide suggestions.  This is a good way to gain hands-on experience, especially if you’re considering graduate school.
  • Credits: 2 is the norm, but 1-4 is allowed; May be taken multiple times.

BIOE 295: Intro to Biomolecular Modeling and Simulation
Description: See catalog listing for BIOS 237 (http://catalog.lehigh.edu/courselisting/bios/ )
Instructor: Professor Wonpil Im (woi216@lehigh.edu )
Prerequisite: CHM 30 or CHM 40

BIOE 297: Introduction to Numerical Methods, New!
Description: Introduction to using numerical methods to solve a variety of problems. Topics include using techniques for solving algebraic and differential equations, and for performing linear regression and other methods of data analysis. Problems will be solved using MATLAB as the computational platform. (Most of the student work will involve programming.)
Prerequisites: Math 22 and ENGR 10
Instructor: Professor Anand Jagota (anj6@lehigh.edu )
This is an excellent opportunity for sophomores, juniors, and seniors to gain experience in programming.

Other technical electives in the catalog that may be of interest to you. The list below is not inclusive, but just has some suggestions.

BIOS 345 (Molecular Genetics), BIOS/CHM 371 & 372 (Biochem 1 & 2)

CSE 007 (Introduction to Programming), CSE 17 (Programming and Data Structures)

ME 240 (Manufacturing)
