Educational Objectives

To achieve its educational mission, Bioengineering has established the following set of Program Educational Objectives. Three to five years after graduation, we expect our students will become:

  • Graduates in professional practice who function effectively as responsible and collaborative professionals in Bioengineering or in a related field; or,
  • Graduates who pursue advanced degrees or engage in other forms of continuing education.

Mission

The mission of the Bioengineering Department is to prepare students to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, innovators, leaders and life-long learners in the field of Bioengineering. We aim to produce ground-breaking research and new knowledge at the interface of the physical and life sciences, and engineering.

The Graduate Program Educational Objectives (PEO's) are as follows:

Consistent with the mission of the Bioengineering Department, the education components of the graduate programs strives to prepare graduates to:

  1. Understand complexities and challenges associated with working in the field of Bioengineering with an advanced degree.
  2. Demonstrate depth of knowledge in Bioengineering and related fields.
  3. Be creators of new knowledge and products in the field of Bioengineering
  4. Succeed in a variety of career paths.

Student outcomes

The Bioengineering program has established that by graduation students will attain:

  • an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  • an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  • an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  • an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  • an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  • an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  • an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
