Welcome to Lehigh's Department of Bioengineering!
At Lehigh, we believe that the greatest potential for innovation occurs at the boundaries between strong disciplines. Sometimes, as with the field of bioengineering, this junction produces a new discipline with a compelling societal impact. Bioengineering began as a loose collection of bio inspired research efforts that drew upon biology and engineering disciplines to offer solutions to biomedical problems.
While mechanical engineers and materials scientists designed biomedical devices, chemical engineers synthesized and scaled up the production of biological pharmaceuticals, and electrical engineers developed electronic and optical diagnostic devices. At the same time, scientists established the molecular and cellular basis of living organisms at a level of physical and chemical detail amenable to the quantitative problem-solving capabilities of the traditional engineering disciplines. | MORE >>
