Spring

2025

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Dear friends and colleagues:

The Spring 2025 issue of our bi-annual newsletter allows us to reflect on the significant accomplishments of the faculty, alumni, and students of Lehigh's Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (MEM) department. It’s been an excellent semester for Lehigh MEM. Our faculty secured exciting new research grants, launched new research initiatives, and won major research awards. Our alumni and current students also won prestigious research awards and fellowships.

In Fall 2023, we announced the MEM Aerospace Initiative and, as part of that initiative, committed to developing an MS program in Aerospace Engineering. We have been working diligently to make that happen. Last week, on the 2nd of May, as we celebrated National Space Day, Lehigh announced a new MS program in Aerospace and Space Systems Engineering as part of the Strategic Plan. This MS program comes from the successful Aerospace Minor in the department that Prof. Terry Hart started almost twenty years ago. We finally have a lift off!

If you appreciate our efforts and the direction the department is heading, please consider making MEM your philanthropic priority this year. Your support is crucial to our continued success and academic excellence efforts as we navigate financial uncertainty due to reductions in federal research opportunities. Your contributions will help elevate MEM students and faculty to greater heights.

Lehigh University research activity recognized with R1 status

R1 is the highest level of research activity in the Carnegie Classification system for institutions with a very high volume of research that award a large number of research doctorates. The classification will attract and retain top faculty, assist in securing funding for academic research and boost the cutting-edge research that attracts doctorate-level students. Lehigh University is the only university in the Lehigh Valley to have the designation and one of only seven in Pennsylvania. Read more >>

Hart shares stories and science in new @iHartAerospace video series

Professor Terry J. Hart '68 is a former NASA astronaut, U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, and telecommunications executive who joined Lehigh's faculty in 2004. In the @iHartAerospace video series, which launched on National Space Day (May 2nd), Hart will field questions about everything from how rockets work to why space missions are so hard to plan. Hart joined NASA as part of its elite “Group 8” astronaut class and flew aboard the space shuttle Challenger in 1984. At Lehigh, Hart has brought real-world insight to the classroom, designed new courses in aircraft and spacecraft engineering, and mentored student teams on NASA-related research.
