BioE Student Spotlight: Gianna Lombardi

This article was written by Juliana M., Bioengineering undergraduate student and student office worker in the Department of Bioengineering.

Gianna Lombardi is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering, with a concentration in Biomechanics and Biomaterials. Originally from Freehold, New Jersey, Lombardi is passionate about applying engineering to improve the quality of life for individuals who use prosthetics. Her interest in bioengineering is inspired by her grandfather, a double-leg amputee. Lombardi saw firsthand the challenges that come with learning to use complex prosthetics. “Watching him face these challenges and being unable to live life to the fullest made me determined to become a bioengineer so I can make life better for individuals like him,” she shares. “My goal after graduation is to develop more user-friendly prosthetic limbs for the elderly and individuals with diverse physical conditions.

At Lehigh, Lombardi is involved in organizations that strengthen her engineering skillset. She’s a member of LUEnable, where she designs prosthetic arms using Solidworks. She also participates in BMES (Biomedical Engineering Society), SWE (Society of Women Engineers), and the Rossin Junior Fellows program. “BMES, SWE, and RJF provide opportunities to build a strong community with fellow bioengineers and the College of Engineering as a whole, enabling me to grow both academically and professionally.”

Lombardi chose Lehigh for “its rigorous academics and the countless opportunities in the field of Bioengineering, not to mention its beautiful campus,” she says. “With hands-on research and internships available to undergraduates, Lehigh provides the experience I need to prepare for my future career. During my college search, I wanted to attend a university that would challenge me academically as a bioengineer while also giving me opportunities to branch out socially and explore interests beyond my major. Attending Lehigh has allowed me to do all of these things, and is the best decision I could have made.”

A standout memory for Lombardi has been the support of her advisor, Professor Lori Herz, whose support and guidance have been integral to Lombardi’s experience. “She regularly checks in to ensure I am reaching my full potential as a student and arranges multiple meetings throughout the year to stay up to date with my progress. I know she genuinely cares about all of her students, and having an advisor who is truly invested in my success has been incredibly reassuring.”

Outside the classroom, Lombardi is a Second Degree Black Belt in Karate, loves to ski, and she can also juggle! Looking ahead, she plans to stay at Lehigh through the 4+1 program to earn her Master of Science in Bioengineering. “Once I complete my Master of Science degree, I intend to enter the workforce and pursue opportunities to make a difference in the medical device and prosthetics field.”

When asked what advice she’d give to other students, Lombardi emphasizes balance, persistence, and community. “It may seem overwhelming at first, but take advantage of all the resources available to you! Reading the textbook before lectures and staying up-to-date on assignments can make a significant difference. If you're struggling with coursework, don't hesitate to ask for assistance. Attending your professor's office hours is not only a great way to gain clarity on the material, but also an opportunity to build a personal connection with them. On a more personal level, put yourself out there, make friends within the bioengineering department, and never limit yourself.”

“I am very grateful to be a part of the bioengineering program,” she adds. “I have made so many great relationships with my Professors and found some of my closest friends in this program.”
