BioE Student Spotlight: Luke Blum

Luke Blum is a sophomore bioengineering student from Newtown, Pennsylvania, pursuing a Bachelor of Science with a specialization in biomechanics. His decision to study bioengineering was driven by his passion for healthcare and the medical field, where he hopes to apply his problem-solving skills to make a tangible impact. Integrating math, physics, and sciences excites him, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative solutions in medicine and healthcare.

Blum chose Lehigh University because of the welcoming atmosphere he experienced when visiting campus, stating: “I decided to come to Lehigh University after feeling welcomed on campus. I knew it would be the perfect balance between academics and social opportunities that would allow me to maximize my college experience.” Although he is still exploring his exact career path, he is particularly interested in working in a hospital setting or directly with patients. Whether maintaining healthcare technology, assisting with prosthetic or medical device implementation, or contributing to innovative biomedical solutions, he is eager to play a role in improving lives. His degree in bioengineering will provide him with the technical expertise and problem-solving skills necessary to seamlessly transition into the workforce and make a real difference in healthcare.

One of Blum’s best memories from his time in Lehigh Bioengineering has been the opportunity to work closely with professors in class, on projects, and during office hours. He appreciates the individualized attention and mentorship that the faculty provides, which has helped him succeed academically. “Specifically, professors like Prof. Ines Seabra demonstrate their genuine care for students to succeed through passionate lectures and engaging coursework every week.”

Some other interesting facts about Blum are that he is colorblind and has a twin brother who attends St. Joseph's University. Luke Blum is also a Rossin Junior Fellow. His experiences at Lehigh have reinforced the importance of time management—an essential skill for any engineering student. He advises current and future bioengineering students to stay on top of their assignments and begin studying early to achieve the best results. By maintaining a strong passion for the subject matter, he believes that coursework can become a rewarding experience rather than just a task to complete.
