BioE Student Spotlight: Sonya Savini
Article written by Rida M., Bioengineering undergraduate student and student office worker in the Department of Bioengineering.
Sonya Savini is a dedicated bioengineering student from King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering at Lehigh University, Savini has chosen to specialize in the Mechanics and Materials track. This concentration allows her to focus on the structural and mechanical aspects of bioengineering, which she finds particularly engaging as it aligns with her goal of enhancing patient care through technology and innovation.
Savini is deeply involved in bioengineering-related activities at Lehigh, including conducting research in the Seshadri lab. Research opportunities like these were a significant factor in her decision to attend Lehigh. As she explains, “I've always wanted to take part in research and expand my knowledge about the field, so Lehigh was just the place for that! The education here is also very prestigious, and I felt that it would be the best fit for my future career!”
The combination of Savini’s passion for both engineering and medicine ultimately drew her to bioengineering as a field of study. "I really like the intersection between medicine and engineering I get by studying bioengineering,” Savani shares. She envisions a future where her skills in engineering will allow her to create medical devices that improve patient outcomes. After completing her degree, she hopes to attend medical school, using her bioengineering background to enhance her understanding of medicine and contribute to advancements in healthcare technology.
When reflecting on her time at Lehigh, Savini emphasizes the importance of the supportive community within the bioengineering department. She says, "I really enjoy the support I get from bioengineering faculty and other bioengineering students. I usually turn to others whenever I need assistance or advice, and it has helped me a lot on my journey.” This sense of community has been instrumental in helping her navigate the challenges of a rigorous academic program.
Beyond her academic pursuits, Savini is also a talented violinist and is a member of the LU Philharmonic Orchestra, showcasing her ability to balance her scientific interests with her love for music.
For current and future bioengineering students, Savini offers some valuable advice: "The bioengineering program here at Lehigh is very rigorous, and I encourage students to turn to their peers and faculty for assistance and advice. Having my peers by my side encourages me to move forward even when things get difficult!"
Savini’s journey at Lehigh reflects her dedication to both learning and collaboration, and her future holds great promise as she continues to blend her engineering expertise with her passion for medicine.
