CompSci professor recognized by wireless tech leader for innovative research that inspires students

Dr. Mooi Choo Chuah, a professor of computer science and engineering at Lehigh University, has been awarded a 2019 Qualcomm Faculty Award (QFA). The award supports key professors and their research through a charitable donation to their university.

The QFA program was created to recognize distinguished faculty research that inspires students and sparks new approaches in key technology areas such as computer vision and to strengthen Qualcomm’s engagement with faculty who are playing a key role in their recruiting of top graduate students.

“As Qualcomm leads the world to 5G and a new era of intelligent, connected systems, it embraces opportunities to advance top-level academic research,” according to a company spokesperson. “Qualcomm is pleased to support professors, students, and their research through several programs including research grants, lab funding, and the Qualcomm Faculty Award.”

Chuah joined the faculty of the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science in 2004 after 12 years with Bell Labs. Widely regarded as one of the world's leading researchers and inventors in the field of wireless data and mobile systems, she holds 63 U.S. and 15 international patents, most of them for innovations with wireless LAN (Local Area Network)-based systems, and for features that enable quality of service and mobility management in WLAN and 3G systems. In 2017, she was elected as a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Some of her past doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students are now working at top technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, Samsung Research, and Snapchat.

Chuah leads research in the WiNS Laboratory. Her lab maintains active research in the design of secure mobile data systems, mobile healthcare, deep learning based systems for vision-based activity recognition, health care data mining, and resilient smart grid control networks.
