NAE member Bruce Rittmann, co-winner of 2018 Stockholm Water Prize, is a professor of environmental engineering at Arizona State

National Academy of Engineering member Bruce E. Rittmann, who is Regents' Professor of Environmental Engineering at Arizona State University, will deliver the 2021 Distinguished Water Lecture at Lehigh University.

Rittmann directs ASU's Biodesign Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology and conducts research on the science and engineering needed to “manage microbial communities to provide services to society.”

On Thursday, Nov. 4, 2021, he will discuss "Environmental Biotechnology, the Means to Maximize the Value of Resources Recovered from Wastewaters." The lecture begins at 4:30 PM in Sinclair Laboratory Auditorium.

The Distinguished Water Lecture series was launched in 2019 by an interdisciplinary faculty team chaired by Arup SenGupta, P.C. Rossin Professor in the departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. The public series brings top researchers, innovators, and policy makers in water science to Lehigh’s campus. Gray Bebout from the College of Arts and Sciences, Todd Watkins from Lehigh’s College of Business, and Kristen Jellison and Mayuresh Kothare of the Rossin College also helped lead the speaker selection process

This Distinguished Lecture is free and open to the Lehigh campus community as well as interested members of the general public.

Rittmann's talk will focus on how environmental biotechnology provides "an outstanding means to turn wastewaters from environmental liabilities to sources of valuable resources."

Rittman is a co-winner of the 2018 Stockholm Water Prize as well as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Water Environment Federation, International Water Association, Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors, and National Academy of Inventors. He is also a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He received his BS and MS degrees in civil engineering from Washington University in St. Louis and his PhD in environmental engineering from Stanford University.
