Dan M. Frangopol, the Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering and Architecture, has been named the inaugural recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) Alfredo Ang Award on Risk Analysis and Management of Civil Infrastructure. The recipient shall have demonstrated outstanding contributions to one or more of the following fields of research: safety and reliability of engineering systems, life-cycle performance under uncertainty, durability and resilience of engineering systems, safety and performance under natural hazards, and related fields.
According to the ASCE, Frangopol is receiving the award "for exceptional efforts in advancing, advocating, and persistently promoting the life-cycle cost analysis of structures and structural systems, and their integration into reliability-based structural analysis and design."
The award is named in honor of Professor Alfredo Ang, Ph.D., S.E., Hon.M.ASCE, NAE, the developer of practical and effective methods of risk and reliability approaches to engineering safety-and-design structural criteria formulation.
The award will be formally presented by the ASCE President Mark Woodson and ASCE Executive Director Thomas Smith during the Society's Annual Convention in Portland, OR, September 28-October 1, 2016.
