Lehigh University, Drexel University, Wayne State University and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) are teaming up to offer a workshop that will help high school math teachers across Philadelphia and the surrounding region answer this age-old (and mind-numbing) question: "When will I ever use this?!?"
On Tuesday, November 3, 8:30am-3:30pm at Drexel University's Gerri C. LeBow Hall, this teachers-only workshop will cover topics in algebraic modeling and the use of Microsoft Excel to support student learning. Perhaps most importantly, the workshop will help teachers make the connection for students between real-world decision-making and the math they are encountering in the classroom.
This professional development opportunity is offered as part of the INFORMS annual meeting, taking place this year in Philadelphia. There is no cost to teachers to attend the workshop, plus INFORMS will reimburse schools up to $100 per attendee to cover costs associated with substitute teachers who fill in for workshop attendees.
The workshop will be led by: Dr. Kenneth Chelst, professor of operations research, Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan; Dr. James J. Cochran, professor of applied statistics, University of Alabama; and, Dr. David Goldsman, professor of Industrial and systems engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology.

- Linear programming
- Multiple criterion decision-making
- Nonlinear functions
