Dr. Jain's research activities include functionality in glass through fundamentals, for example: Laser fabrication of active single crystal architecture in glass - lattice engineering. Light-induced novel phenomena. Glasses for IR biosensors, photo- and nano-lithography, photonics. Tailored transparent ferroelectric nano-composites. Nano-macro porous glass for bone-scaffolds. Point defects, electrical relaxation, conductivity and dielectric properties of amorphous and crystalline ceramics. Surface conduction. Mechanisms of diffusion and nuclear spin relaxation in glasses. Effect of radiation on transport properties. Liquid phase sintering. Processing of materials for optical applications. Corrosion of glass in relation to manufacturing and nuclear waste disposal.

Dr. Jain is the T.L. Diamond Distinguished Chair in Engineering and Applied Science and a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering. He served as the inaugural director of the Institute for Functional Materials and Devices (I-FMD) at Lehigh University from 2018 to 2024. An author of 11 patents and over 380 research publications, he is the editor or author of ten books or special journal issues on glass science and technology. Over the past three decades he has focused on introducing new functionality and novel processing of glass through fundamentals, and making glass education available worldwide freely. Jain is a recipient of Otto Schott Research international prize for his ‘jellyfish’ model of atomic fluctuations in glass, Zachariasen international award for outstanding contribution to glass research through the discovery of isotope mass effect in lithium transport in glass, Alfred University’s Scholes Lecture award for the development of active glasses, American Ceramic Society’s Varshneya Frontiers of Glass Science Lecture award and Morey award for new and original work in defining new horizons in the field of glass science and technology, Lehigh University’s Libsch award for research and Hillman award for long-term excellence, Fulbright Fellowship for lecturing and research at Cambridge and Aberdeen universities in UK, and a Humboldt Fellowship for research in Germany. He is a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society.
