ISE celebrates a year of accomplishments
Lehigh’s Industrial and Systems Engineering Department celebrated an academic year full of accomplishments at its annual banquet and awards ceremony on Thursday, May 2, 2019.
ISE Department Chair Luis Nunes Vicente presented Stacey Cunningham ‘96, current president of the New York Stock Exchange, with the 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award for Excellence in Industry. Ms. Cunningham also presented the Spencer C. Schantz Distinguished Lecture earlier that day.

Rossin Awards honor excellence across Lehigh's engineering college
On April 25, members of the Lehigh Engineering community gathered at Building C for the second annual Rossin College Awards Ceremony.
“This is a great chance to recognize what our faculty, staff, and students do for the college and for the university,” said Steve DeWeerth, professor and dean of the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science. “It’s wonderful to be doing this for a second year.”
$5 million gift transforming residential life and learning
With a $5 million gift to elevate the student experience, Julie ’20P ’21P and Jordan Hitch ’88 ’20P ’21P are providing for future generations of Lehigh scholars by being the first to support the New Residential Houses project—a dynamic new cluster of six residences being built west of the Clayton University Center at Packer Hall. Hitch House and two other houses will be available to students starting Fall 2020.

2019 Van Hoesen Family Best Publication Competition announced
Through a generous gift from the Van Hoesen family, we are pleased to announce the fifth annual Van Hoesen Family Best Publication Competition. The competition is open to all Lehigh ISE department students. The 2019 Selection Committee is comprised of Professors Ralphs (Committee Chair), Takáč, and Scheinberg.

Remembering a visionary in computer science, AI
Donald Hillman, an emeritus professor of computer science at Lehigh and a pioneer in artificial intelligence, died in October 2018. He was 86.
Born in London, England, in 1931, he had survived the Blitz on London, enduring five months of nightly air raids by the Nazis. He spoke four languages, shook Winston Churchill’s hand, painted, drew and cooked like a pro. He played the guitar and was a master at the piano. He fought in the Korean War and was commissioned as a Captain upon his discharge.
The rise of machine learning
There’s a recognized gap between the experts who develop new algorithms and computational methods, and those who apply and adapt those technologies in specific domains.
It’s a vexing interdisciplinary gap, and through its TRIPODS + X program, it is one that the National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks to bridge.
Filmmaker to present documentary on inclusion in STEM fields
Filmmaker Kendall Moore will present a screening of her documentary Can We Talk? Difficult Conversations with Underrepresented People of Color: Sense of Belonging and Obstacles to STEM Fields on Wednesday, April 10.
The film looks at various obstacles and impediments—structural, cultural, psychological, and institutional—that effectively limit the inclusion and participation of underrepresented people of color in STEM fields.
