When Fei Jia goes to work in Lehigh’s Sinclair Laboratory, he knows there’s a possibility that things might get a little chilly.
On days when the PhD student in electrical and computer engineering isn’t fabricating laser chips in the Integrated Nanofabrication and Cleanroom Facility, he’s likely penetrating the polyethylene sheets with highly specialized lasers that require extremely cold temperatures (i.e., 60–70 degrees Kelvin, or about -350 degrees Fahrenheit).
When you think of the U.S. Navy, the image of researchers using scanning electron microscopes to study alloys probably doesn’t come to mind.
But that’s exactly the type of work that Nick Yang ’21 ’22G is doing for the Navy as a research assistant while he’s enrolled in Lehigh University’s master’s degree (MS) program in materials science and engineering (MSE).
Lehigh has a long-standing research partnership with the U.S. Navy to find ways of improving the performance of ships and other maritime systems.
Shen Wang, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, was awarded a 2022 academic scholarship from the Society of Tribologists & Lubrication Engineers (STLE) Philadelphia Section.
Congratulations to chemical engineering graduate Kelby Anderson ‘22, winner of the Robert Ridgeway Senior Cup!The Ridgeway Cup is awarded annually to the senior in the College of Engineering with the highest cumulative average. Below, Anderson shares reflections about her research interests, future plans, and what drew her to Lehigh.
