Mechanical engineering alum Denis Aslangil ’15G ’19 PhD has joined the faculty of the University of Alabama as an assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics.

His research group will explore “multi-physics and multi-material effects on turbulence and turbulent mixing that are observed in the nuclear fusion process, atmospheric, oceanic, and astrophysical flows, supersonic transportation, and combustion.”

Previously, Aslangil was a postdoctoral fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Aslangil completed his MS and PhD at Lehigh and was advised by Professor Arindam Banerjee, chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics. Banerjee leads Lehigh’s Turbulent Flow Design Group. Aslangil’s dissertation topic was “Dynamics Of Buoyancy-Driven Variable-Density Non-Boussinesq Turbulence.”

“Dr. Aslangil’s research and novel discoveries on variable density turbulence conducted at Lehigh will be used by many researchers and be seen as a seminal contribution to the topic,” says Banerjee. “I am confident he will continue to advance our knowledge in this area as he leads his own research group at the University of Alabama. I wish him well as he establishes his own research group and develops an externally funded research program.”
